Director of Client Services,University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee:
Member of the management team that reported to the CIO of the Information & Media Technologies Division.  Our division reported to the Office of Academic Affairs and is comprised of 130+ full time professionals and 300 student staff. In this position I was responsible for a full time staff of 30+ IT professionals and more than 100 student employees. Responsiblities included budet, operational and planning oversight for this campus-wide IT support unit. Campus computer labs, mediated classrooms, AV support services, computer account management, campus security, technical support of School of Architecture laptop program, computer printing services, distance education technologies, desktop imaging and security, and the campus 24/7 helpdesk.

Director of Instructional Media Services:University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
Instructional Media Services, is responsible for interactive multimedia development, video program design/production, multimedia classroom design/support, mediated classrooms, media distribution network, classroom scheduling, a Classroom Hotline, media equipment distribution, distributed learning technologies,  and facilities design and operation. Budget responsibilities include meeting income requirements of this partially funded unit, developing income strategies for content development, grant development, and monitoring classroom remodeling project funds. The departmental operating budget for my staff of 17 FTE professionals and 35 students exceeded $900.000 for Fiscal year 1999-2000.   Total expenditure control, including facilities remodeling projects during fiscal 2001/2002 will exceed $1,800,000. The total I&MT budget was more than $13 million.
The Instructional Media Services unit operates nine C/KU band satellite downlinks, a 12 channel broadcast system that links the campus to more than 150 metro-Milwaukee and regional sites, a campus-wide fiber and broadband media distribution system, a video over IP network, three distance education classroom studios, three compressed video studios, 38 networked multimedia classrooms, 162 general access classrooms, 200+ departmental classrooms, a professional television production studio, a multi-camera remote truck, a digital video & multimedia production services center, and a Classroom Hotline/Helpdesk.
Emerging instructional and information technologies play an important role in my day-to-day response to campus instructional media needs.  I have been involved in the research, design, and implementation of a wide range of innovative media projects at UWM.

Representative projects include:

  • Design and presentation of a campus-wide multimedia literacy program & workshops for faculty
  • Blackboard and Prometheous web course developer, workshop presenter, and faculty mentor.

Project Consultant, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Research Center, Tampa, Florida:

During this special three months project , I developed an Internet-based oncology information and continuing education network for physicians, health care providers and patients, and helped design a comprehensive staffing and facilities plan for Moffitt’s Educational Resource Center. Other experience included concept design, production team oversight, user interface design, content development, Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Nursing Education module design for on-line delivery, and testing of the Moffitt Network with target audiences. I retained a 15% appointment at UWM during this project.
Secondary responsibility included co-authoring two grants designed to improve migrant worker health education.

Information Technology Consultant, UWM Center for Science Education

The Center for Science Education supports a traveling science van and UWM site visits for K-12 students. One recent project that I designed and supervised was a technology day for AP science teachers that provided a hands-on experience with a number of distance education technologies. I’m currently developing a videoconferencing over IP system that will connect UWM to the Milwaukee Public School System, researching and writing grant proposals to enhance K-12 science education, writing and presenting a workshop about robots, co-designing a year-long Wisconsin River Quest project, and producing a web-based course about the Center and its activities.

Associate Director, UWM Educational Communications Division (ECD):

Management of a full service instructional media center, development of an emerging media demonstration laboratory.  ECD services included video production, multimedia development, visual design, photography, distance education technologies, cable distribution system, and satellite videoconferencing.  I also served as a mentor to architecture students interested in 3D visualization and simulations. The merger of ECD, Computer Services, and Administrative Computing into the Information & Media Technologies Division , resulted in the elimination of ECD, with services re- distributed throughout the I&MT Division.

Manager of Cable and Distance Education Services, (ECD):

In addition to the activities suggested by the position title, I was involved in co- writing media-centered grant proposals, and responsible for the introduction and development of a campus-wide interactive multimedia literacy program for faculty. Additional responsibilities included a 20% assignment to the School of Nursing at UWM to help the faculty implement interactive technologies throughout the school’s curriculum. I provided guidance and liaison services to the Higher Education Cable Consortium, composed of 12 public and private institutions from the metro-Milwaukee area.

Instructor, School of Library and Information Sciences:

This adjunct faculty  position was concurrent with I&MT responsibilities outlined above.
During this period I developed the curriculum and taught information technology courses to graduate students in the School of Library and Information Sciences. I was one of the instructors in a special Masters level degree program designed for library directors from 26 higher education institutions in Mexico.
I also taught an intensive summer course about emerging interactive multimedia in Mexico City, Mexico, and was invited back as the keynote speaker for an international conference on multimedia.
Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), Milwaukee, WI
Videoconference Center Coordinator:

Responsible for developing satellite teleconferences, seminars, workshops and courses for a state-of-the-art videoconference center. I wrote a comprehensive distance education implementation plan for a multi-channel ITFS system for MATC’s five regional campuses which was implemented in the early 1990′s.

University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
Cable Television Manager, Educational Communications Division:

While in this limited term, full-time position, I managed the campus cable system, coordinated satellite videoconferences, trained faculty in the use of ITV, scheduled programming for the Higher Educational Cable Consortium (HECC) for broadcast on UWM’s ITFS channels, and introduced the concept of interactive multimedia to campus faculty and staff.

Wisconsin Vocational Technical Adult Education, Inc., Milwaukee
Instructional Designer, Wisconsin Interactive Video Project:

Co-produced and programmed a series of 39 interactive videodiscs and authored related student/teacher textbooks about basic math. (Interactive ModuMath) I helped implement the statewide acceptance of this interactive videodisc- based instruction through numerous workshops and faculty development seminars.

Professional Systems Network, Inc., Milwaukee (PSNI)
Executive Director:

As Executive Director, I developed a nationwide network that provided marketing and public relations services to professional video systems dealers, and presented special media workshops for PSNI members.  I authored a Customer Bill of Rights and a Dealer Code of Ethics which are still in use today throughout the PSNI network.

Director of Instructional Media:

As Director, I reorganized the instructional media services division and staff of 45 full-time and 50+ part-time employees. My division was responsible for the design, development, production, evaluation and utilization of a wide range of media including computers, video, print, photography, teleconferencing (ITFS and satellite), multi-media presentations, computer assisted instruction, videodiscs and computer graphics.
I initiated media projects and directed activities for a staff of graphic designers, photographers, media producers/directors, AV specialists, electronic engineers, and part-time and student employees.  I administered an annual budget of $1.75 million, prepared cost allocation reports and long-range projections of campus and University of California system-wide communications needs.

Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Director of the Center for Instructional Media Services:

The Media Center at Marquette had more than 22,000 square feet of space devoted to the production of media for instructional and non-instructional clients. As the Director, I designed classroom and production facilities, introduced the campus to interactive media, specified equipment, evaluated venders and supervised installation of a wide range of media related facilities. I was responsible for a full-time staff of 15, and an annual operating and equipment budget of $750,000.  As Director, I often taught Speech and Mass Communication classes, and mentored students enrolled in communication courses.

Manager of Production Services:

I was a founder of the Instructional Media Center, and hired, trained and supervised the Instructional Media Center production and AV services staff.  My staff was also responsible for instructional media services support. While Production Manager, I gained significant experience in all areas of instructional media while producing a wide variety of programming for instruction and public relations.  Programs produced by me ranged from single projector slide presentations to multi-camera television remotes. I was responsible for budget development and management, media selection, script writing, creative direction and final presentation.  As Production Manager, I worked closely with many campus instructors to encourage the use of media in courses.  During my tenure as Production Manager, I gradually increased my department’s staff from one to eleven employees.

Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana
Producer/Director – Staging & Lighting Director, WTIU-TV, Indiana University:

Developed interactive (live) televised classes for the Indiana Higher Educational Telecommunications Systems (IHETS), a state-wide ITFS television network, and produced and directed live and taped programs for WTIU-TV, a PBS television station which serves southern Indiana. I also designed, built and lit scenery for a series of operas, jazz performances, music recitals, interviews, dramas, and instructional programming.

As a media consultant and principal for Grozik Associates, I have worked with a variety of regional and national clients.  Projects have included the design, programming, and production of interactive exhibits for the City of Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Public Museum, the Minnetrista Cultural Center, Muncie, Indiana, and the Jewish Holocaust Museum in St. Louis, Missouri. I developed the exhibit concept & design for AT&T that served as their main trade show exhibit at the fall, ’94, Comdex convention, the largest computer exposition in the U.S.   Design elements showed up in AT&T’s Olympic pavilion in Atlanta, GA.
